THE VOICE from the SIERRA MADRE ORIENTAL is composed of submissions concerning experiences of a semi-retired Gringo who lives in an entirely Mexican rural community in the Mexican interior, on the very face of the Sierra Madre Oriental. You will be able to see, up close and personal, may of the details of our little mud hut. Our place is not in a tourist area. It is in a scenic and interesting setting. We are the only gringos in this particular part of the country. While the settings are rural, we are situated only about 22 miles west-northwest of the capital of the State of Tamaulipas, Ciudad Victoria, which is a pleasant, progressive city of about 330,000 souls.

Our blog concerns events that occur locally as well as elsewhere in Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere in the universe. It also degenerates into the grumblings of an old rightwing Curmudgeon who worries about things like pampers in parking lots and other important matters. The visitor should also be aware that the writer of this blog believes that carbon dioxide is food for trees, and that the Earth really is flat.

Windy Return to Texas

Returned from a few pleasant days down at the Quinta. The theme, I would guess, was that everything was perfectly boring, there were a zillion birds including various new ones, and that the mornings were quite cold....for my old bones....and that my calling as a slave to cats and dogs was well acquitted. There will be some tales to tell and some observations coming on-line during the next few days, so stand by for a bit. By tomorrow we might be able to put some thoughts together.

The Old Gringo

Born in McAllen, Texas during the middle of the 20th Century. Educated in public schools, graduating from Southwest Texas State University (to-day known as Texas State University), B.A. Sociology/Social Sciences with emphasis on Latin American / Mexican affairs.

Old-line Episcopalian, Confederate by nature, although his paternal grandfather lost a brother and a very close 1st cousin as members of the 96th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, one a month before and the other a month after the early July, 1863 incident at Gettysburg. Maternal side was Confederate. The Old Gringo regards the War as having been wholly avoidable and regrettable, but he would have supported the Southern Cause.
Very conservative in terms of political pursuasion. Married, with two grown children who live in idyllic places in Central Texas. Both are graduates of Texas State University (previously known as Southwest Texas State University). Wife is not very smart, because she has put up with the Old Gringo for over 40 years. She is an accountant in public sector, and has never failed to resolve her records to the penny.
The Old Gringo likes decent music of almost any kind, but no acid rock, heavy metal, rap, or hip-hop. Anything else...African tribal chorus, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Rocky Top, Classical (Hayden,both Straus, Beethoven, Mozart, many others), Rock & Roll 1953 - 1965, New Age, ABBA, Enya, Mexican Bolero (Trio Los Panchos), Huasteca/VeraCruzana (La Bamba), Spanish classical guitar, quite a bit of Country & Western, Sousa Marches, etc. Favourite song?? probably, just like Abraham Lincoln's favourite....Dixie.

GOOD AND INTERESTING THINGS:
(In no particular order) Baseball, fishing, firearms, cooking, meteorology, geography, history, political affairs, social demography, linguistics, garage sales, WSJ, antiques, things that work, compliance, people who can repair things, quiet, Antiques Roadshow, classical radio programs, overnight radio, correct and precise use of the English and Spanish languages, Good Works, fancy rituals of the Anglican, Roman, and other Orthodox Christian Churches and conservative and orthodox Jewish congregations, ghosts, flying saucers, good liquor & beer, genealogy (ies), Renoir & other Impressionists, cats, and then outside dogs, most animals, things that are clean but not fussy, Victorian period, traditions, disciplined children, railroad trains-passenger or freight, the fragrance of a quality cigar, and a million other little things, mayhap a billion....

BAD AND DISGUSTING THINGS:
public assistance, Socialism under any guise (Bolshevik, National, Popular, Marxist, Marxist-Leninist, Hugo Chavez's, Castros'), litter & garbage, filth, stupidity, sense of entitlement to anything unearned, cold, mistreatment of children, animals and/or machinery, most medical procedures, drunks and abstentors who try to impose their preferences and proclivities about alcohol on me or anyone else in particular, almost all Democrats. Ku Klux Klan, and/or anyone who tells me I am obliged to hate or love someone or consider anyone guilty or innocent because of his nationality, skin colour, or other in-born characteristic. Church reformers (if you don't like your church, go to another. Don't force the changes you want on those who were previously satisfied), grocery carts and and/or pampers left in the parking lot, tailgating drivers, and dumbo drivers who pass with urgency only to immediately slow down suddenly to make a turn at an intersection or to take an exit, politicians who want to put everyone else's assets where the politician's mouth is, any law which requires more than three double-spaced paragraphs typed on a legal sized page, advertising by attorneys,banks, and monopolies, most unions and almost all union official
